Let’s Take a Step Further

You’re Awesome!

You have already got your Excel basics in place and you’re well placed to take your Excel skills to the next level.

And just in case you haven’t seen it already, I have created three advanced Excel courses that I have made absolutely free for everyone. You can access these courses using the links below (these are on YouTube):

  1. Excel Dashboard Course
  2. Excel VBA Course
  3. Excel Power Query Course

Now before we begin, I just want to let you know that learning Excel is a gradual process. I speak from the experience and even after 8 years of working with Excel, there is a lot I don’t know.

The truth is, there is no one who knows everything. As soon as you get a grip on one of the concepts in Excel, there’s another shiny new one waiting in the queue.

With this in mind, let’s make sure that the aim is to learn advanced Excel in a way that you get the maximum mileage out of it. If something doesn’t apply to your job/work, skip it and move to the next one that does.

I’ll continue to send you intermediate/advanced Excel tips, and I hope it would help you in getting the work done in the best possible way in the least amount of time.

Now, while I work on your learning plan, have a look at the Excel Ebook I created for you (I am sure you have it already, but putting a link here again). It’s full of amazing Excel Tips that you can start using right away. And if you get stuck somewhere, remember I am here to help.

In the comments section below, let me know your immediate Excel priorities, and stuff you would want to learn.

  37. Thank you for your analysis of Excel basics. I am following what you teach and I’m trying variations. I’ve learned a great deal from you.
I have also discovered that there are significant changes between Excel 2016 and Excel 2019. For example, in Excel 2019 a blank cell is sometimes treated as containing a zero (not as an undefined cell or #VALUE!), but not always logically evaluated as such. In a logical evaluation of =AND(A1, A2, A3), if A1 is blank/empty, A2 is B1 (B1=1), and A3 is a negative number (say, -6), the evaluation is TRUE. However, the logical evaluation of =AND(A1) is FALSE. In summary, when an empty cell is grouped with TRUE cells, the evaluation of AND is TRUE. The logical evaluation of an empty cell that is by itself in an AND equation, =AND(A1), or a cell that contains zero is FALSE.
Note that in Excel 2019, the logical evaluation of a negative number is TRUE.
How do we know that an empty cell is sometimes treated as containing zero even though that cell is not always logically evaluated as containing 0? Upon clicking on =AND(logical1, [logical2], [logical3], [logical4], …) for the above example =AND(A1,A2,A3), I am able to click on logical1 and a 0 appears as being the contents of the empty cell A1. For comparison, I click on logical2 and get ”B1”; for logical3, I get -6.
In conclusion an empty cell can be either logically evaluated as being TRUE if it is grouped with TRUE arguments in an AND relation, and the empty cell can be treated as containing 0 and be logically evaluated as being FALSE if there are no other arguments in an AND relation.
Thanks again for the details that you point out in Excel.

I am 84 so much of what I knew is not quite in my brain anymore. I’ve never used any version beyond Excel 97 but I did a lot with Multiplan and Viscalc before that. When I first got acquainted with Viscalc, I thought it was magic what I could do with numbers. I only looked briefly at your stuff but it appears that you have really dug into it and created a great deal of valuable training material. I get most of my data as PDF files so I have tried to convert it to Excel and it works except for (whatever.) I refuse to spend the big bucks for one of the major programs so I am continuing to limp along with with the many “free” conversions that are available. I’m learning – but slowly.

I would like to know more about pivot tables, dashboards, and getting to write macros well with the in built facility. However when I tried the count the non blank cells feature with the formula you have given, which happens to be =COUNTA(A1:A11)+ COUNTIF(A1:A11, “?*”) I get 22! I did not import the data, I just entered it. I don’t know what I am doing wrong. If we use just either one of the above terms, we get 11. Shouldn’t we be subtracting that =” ” term out? Why do we add? And I don’t quite understand why a cell which contains a formula should be treated as blank.

I’m good with all the basics, but am new to formulas & functions. From other internet searches I’ve built some drop down menus/auto-populate devises (using data validation & VLOOKUP) that point to info on a hidden worksheet, which allows me to ~control what the user sees and how they select their projects (although these are pretty complicated and I’m sure they can be simplified).

So, for my ‘first phase’ of learning – I need to a) simplify what I’ve done, b) learn to lock down the worksheet so folks cant overwrite what I have – as well as c) create some kind of a ‘create a new project’ devise (with my defined structure) w/o users hammering on the formulas I have in place…

I have the huge advantage of being married to a dB developer, so he’s created the Access side of things – but the more I can do on my own, the fewer ‘tech support’ calls I make to him!

I have loved your idea to help all those who use or want to use the goodness of Excel.
I think most of us only use the minimum of the functions offered by Excel,
because we use it empirically and we do not systematize learning.
That is why I consider what you do and I thank you for the time you spend on it.
I work in a laboratory that performs physical-chemical tests on water, wastewater and solid waste.
I use Excel a lot in the statistical processing of test results and in assuring the quality of those results.
However, I am very interested in automating a bit of processing, for example, in rejecting data according to reference values.
I hope I can count on your help.

Only so long ago as yesterday I looked at the ribbon and more precisely the formulas bar and the library. I questioned myself what are the formulas I know and use. So don’t ask me about:
    1. Financial formulas at all
    2. Trigonometry (spelled correct?) not so much (except the obvious ones, off course). Only recently (to my shame) discovered aggregate.
    3. Statistical functions ( average, etcetera)
    4. Cube: don’t have a clue what it can do
    5. Engineering (really?)

    6. Database functions I haven’t used much neither
=> Not bad for someone who followed several advanced courses. And I haven’t touched array formulas yet. 😉

On my to priority to learn list:
    1. Goal seek, Scenarios and What if…

  213. Although I am more of the Advanced user of Excel (nested functions, etc.), my lack is in VBA. I have built some macros through the recordings, which is a great help. However, I lack the ability to edit them if there are issues. So, I tend to delete and start again, only to have the same issues. I realize, it is a language all to itself.

  228. Hi Sumit,
Thanks for tips book. It is indeed unique. My priorities in excel are:
Having worked with pivots, table and table based formulas, match index…approximate, exact I have a few templates developed. My quest is now towards using Excel as a BI tool, using connections, more of security features, apt use of vba n macros…..being able to quickly tell a story from the data with a visual appeal. How to quickly weed out clarity out of a maize of ambiguity. I know its a gradual process….but am sure you have a few suggestions on how to go about more efficiently.
