How to Square a Number in Excel

There are multiple ways to calculate the square of a number in Excel.

You can use the in-built POWER function or the Caret operator (^).

Let me show you how to quickly calculate the square of a number in Excel.

Using the POWER Function

POWER function allows you to get the square, cube, or any power of a number with a simple formula.

Below I have a dataset and I want to get the square value of the numbers in column A in column B.

Here is the formula that will give us the square of the numbers:

=POWER(A2,2)

I entered this formula and cell B2 and then copied it for all the other cells in the column.

In the above formula, the first argument is the cell reference that has the number, and the second argument is the exponent that should be raised to this number.

You can also use this formula to calculate the cube value, quartic value, or any other polynomial value for a number.

For example, if you want to calculate the cube of a number, you can use =POWER(A2,3).
